A Russian SU-30 fighter jet breached NATO airspace near Vaindloo Island in the Gulf of Finland, prompting an emergency response on Wednesday. The incident lasted approximately a minute, with the jet failing to communicate with Estonian air traffic control or file a flight plan.

In response, Italy’s Air Force units stationed at Ă„mari Air Base were deployed by NATO’s Baltic Air Policing to monitor the situation. Despite the airspace violation, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna emphasized that there was no direct threat to Estonian security.

This marked the first airspace infringement by a Russian warplane in Estonia this year. Previously, in September, three Russian MIG-31 jets flew over Estonian airspace for 12 minutes without permission, sparking criticism from Estonian officials who labeled the act as “unprecedentedly brutal.”

NATO confirmed intercepting the aircraft and condemned Russia’s actions, highlighting the need for swift political and economic responses to deter further border violations. Estonia’s Foreign Minister reiterated the importance of addressing Russia’s increasing border provocations with firm measures.
