Dozens of individuals sustained injuries in Israel as a result of Iranian missile strikes aimed at two locations near the nation’s primary nuclear research center. The Israeli military confirmed that their defenses were ineffective in intercepting the missiles that struck the cities of Dimona and Arad in the southern region, leading to severe injuries among several individuals.
Israel’s army chief, General Eyal Zamir, stated, “The conflict is far from over,” in response to Iran’s targeting of Israel’s nuclear program. The attack is believed to be a retaliatory measure following strikes on Iran’s Natanz nuclear enrichment facility. Limited information from Iran has made it challenging to assess the extent of damage caused by the US and Israeli strikes that commenced on February 28 on Iran’s military, nuclear, and energy facilities.
Iran’s official news agency, Mizan, reported no radiation leaks following the strike on the Natanz nuclear facility, located approximately 135 miles southeast of Tehran. The UN nuclear watchdog disclosed that the majority of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, estimated at 970lb, is situated elsewhere, mainly at its Isfahan facility, with a smaller quantity at Natanz. Israel’s military denied any involvement in the strike.
Residents of the capital Tehran reported heavy airstrikes during the night and morning hours, coinciding with thousands of worshippers gathering at the city’s grand mosque for prayers marking the conclusion of Ramadan. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned of a significant escalation in attacks in the upcoming week, as the state broadcaster in Iran mentioned over 1,500 casualties in the ongoing conflict.
Recent events involved Iran targeting Diego Garcia in the Chagos Islands before the UK Government authorized the US to strike missile sites aiming at the Strait of Hormuz. However, the exact timing of the two intermediate-range ballistic missiles fired remains unclear. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) refrained from commenting on the timing of the attacks, with reports indicating that one missile was intercepted by a US warship while the other malfunctioned in flight.
The MoD strongly condemned Iran’s assault on Diego Garcia, emphasizing the threat posed by Iran’s aggressive actions across the region, particularly in holding the Strait of Hormuz at risk. The UK Government’s decision to allow the US to utilize British bases for specific defensive operations reflects the seriousness of the situation.
