Pope Leo XIV has prioritized a personal initiative to travel to African countries with the highest growth rate of Catholic followers. The Vatican disclosed that during an 11-day journey, Pope Leo intends to shift global focus towards Africa, which has witnessed a significant surge in baptized Catholics based on recent surveys.

The tour will highlight Africa’s increasing significance in Catholicism, with approximately 288 million Catholics residing in the region, representing over a fifth of the global Catholic population. This makes Africa one of the swiftly expanding Catholic regions worldwide.

This trip marks the second major foreign expedition for Pope Leo XIV, the first Pope born in the United States. The itinerary includes visits to 11 cities across Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea. Notably, Algeria, although predominantly Muslim, holds special importance as the birthplace of St. Augustine, whose teachings profoundly influenced Pope Leo XIV.

The Pope’s visit aims to engage in discussions on peace, migration, and interfaith dialogue, particularly with the Islamic community as a focal point. The tour seeks to foster Christian-Muslim coexistence amid global conflicts.

Acknowledging the small Catholic community in Algeria compared to the Muslim majority, the Archbishop of Algiers emphasized the significance of unity and harmony among diverse religious groups in building a cohesive society.

In response to criticism from US President Donald Trump regarding his stance on Iran, Pope Leo reiterated the Vatican’s commitment to peace and reconciliation rooted in Gospel teachings. The Pope emphasized the church’s mission in advocating for peace despite differing political views.

Addressing the media aboard his plane, Pope Leo expressed his dedication to upholding the Gospel’s message and the church’s contemporary role in the world, emphasizing the importance of understanding the essence of his mission amidst differing opinions.
