“Family Seeks Justice for Beloved Chef’s Fatal One-Punch Assault”

The family of a beloved chef, known as a “gentle giant,” expressed their disappointment with the lenient jail term given to his assailant, a Royal Marine. Cemal John Yilmaz, 29, tragically passed away after being struck by Royal Marine Commando Joseph Jones, 22, during a night out in Exmouth, Devon. The assault, described as a swift, jab-style punch, left Cemal unconscious and ultimately led to his death.

Yilmaz’s family is seeking justice after Jones received a three-and-a-half-year sentence for manslaughter. In an interview with the Manchester Evening News, Cemal’s parents, Ann and Ozkan, shared their anguish over the loss of their son and their efforts to appeal the sentence, aiming to raise awareness about the devastating consequences of one-punch incidents.

According to Ann, the fatal encounter occurred innocuously when Yilmaz engaged in a brief conversation with Jones outside a bar. Without warning, Jones struck Yilmaz under the chin, causing him to collapse and suffer fatal injuries. Despite immediate medical attention, Yilmaz succumbed to his injuries four days later at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

Described by his family as an extraordinary and selfless individual, Yilmaz’s loved ones continue to grapple with his untimely death following Jones’s sentencing. Jones turned himself in at Exeter Police station the day after the incident and was subsequently charged with manslaughter. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years and four months in prison before becoming eligible for release on license.

Ann criticized the sentence as unjust, emphasizing the need for stricter penalties for one-punch attacks, especially involving individuals like Jones. The family has launched an online petition denouncing Yilmaz’s death as an injustice and appealing the sentence length, garnering over 4,000 signatures. Despite their efforts, they await further developments on their appeal.
