A father of three tragically took his own life following a dental procedure gone wrong in Turkey, leaving him without teeth, an inquest revealed. Pawel Bukowski, 48, was discovered deceased at his residence by a psychiatrist on April 28 last year. The procedure that was meant to replace his teeth with implants turned into a nightmare as he was sent back home without teeth and informed he would have to wait six months for the implants.
His wife, Daria Bukowska, testified that despite their efforts to support him, he lost hope for improvement. Mr. Bukowski had been battling periodontal disease for years, which ultimately led to the decision to undergo the dental treatment. The failed procedure shattered his self-confidence and emotional well-being, leading to a decline in his mental health.
Struggling to eat and resorting to heavy drinking, Mr. Bukowski’s mental health deteriorated rapidly. Emergency services transported him to Norfolk and Norwich Hospital on April 24, where he was assessed and deemed to have strong suicidal ideation. Despite concerns for his safety, he was not admitted for psychiatric care at that time due to certain protective factors identified.
Following his death, an investigation by Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust highlighted areas for improvement in his care. The coroner concluded that the dental treatment’s failure significantly impacted Mr. Bukowski’s mental state, leading to excessive alcohol consumption and a deteriorating family life. The inquest also revealed personal tragedies in Mr. Bukowski’s past, shedding light on his struggles and the impact of his untimely death on his loved ones.
The coroner noted that Mr. Bukowski’s intention to end his life was evident from messages and notes he left behind. The couple’s family and friends mourned the loss of a skilled, resourceful, and deeply loved individual, emphasizing the need for better support systems to prevent similar tragedies. The inquest highlighted missed opportunities for intervention and the importance of addressing mental health issues promptly.
