Over 250 Missing After Boat Capsizes in Andaman Sea

At least 250 individuals have gone missing following a boat overturning while en route to Malaysia. Among the missing are Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals traveling in the Andaman Sea towards Malaysia, as reported by the United Nations’ refugee and migration agencies. The exact timing of the incident and search efforts for the missing persons remain uncertain as of Wednesday, April 15.

A joint statement by the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) revealed that the trawler set sail from Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, heavily loaded with passengers heading for Malaysia. The overcrowded boat succumbed to strong winds and rough seas, leading to its loss of control and eventual sinking, according to the agencies.

The UNHCR and IOM emphasized that the disappearance highlights the prolonged displacement of Rohingya people and the persistent lack of solutions to address the issue. Ongoing unrest in Myanmar’s Rakhine state has created uncertainty around the safe return of Rohingyas to Myanmar, coupled with restricted humanitarian aid, limited educational and employment opportunities in refugee camps. Consequently, vulnerable Rohingya refugees are compelled to undertake perilous sea voyages, often lured by false promises of better pay and prospects abroad.

Calling for increased funding and support, the UNHCR and IOM urged the global community to provide critical aid to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, where over 1 million Rohingya from Myanmar have sought refuge.
