Keir Starmer reaffirmed his stance on the Iran conflict despite recent criticisms from Donald Trump. The UK Prime Minister emphasized that he will not be swayed by pressure from the US President following the UK’s decision to stay out of the war.
President Trump has been vocal in his disapproval of the UK’s refusal to support US/Israeli military actions in the Middle East. During a session of Prime Minister’s Questions, Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey raised concerns about Trump’s threat to revoke the trade deal with the UK due to their non-participation in the conflict.
Starmer maintained his position on avoiding involvement in the Iran war, stating that it does not align with the national interest. He also defended the upcoming state visit of King Charles to the US, emphasizing the historical significance of the relationship between the two countries.
In an interview with Sky News, Trump expressed his liking for Starmer but criticized UK policies on energy and immigration. He highlighted perceived shortcomings in the US-UK relationship, mentioning issues of assistance and trade deals.
Despite Trump’s critical remarks, he downplayed the impact on the upcoming royal visit, stating that the strained relationship would not overshadow the visit. He clarified that the King was not involved in the diplomatic tensions between the two nations.
