NASA is eyeing a new $20 billion moon base in a competitive space race with China. The upcoming Artemis III mission will involve astronauts practicing docking maneuvers in Earth’s orbit. Dr. Mathias Basner from the University of Pennsylvania has studied space crews, including the Kelly twins, since 2008. He mentioned the current space race between the US and China, albeit on a smaller scale than the historical race with the Soviet Union.

NASA is set to announce the Artemis III crew shortly, aiming to enhance safety for future moon landings. Recent futuristic images released by NASA showcase the planned moon base, following the success of the Artemis II mission. Additionally, NASA revealed plans for a Mars mission utilizing nuclear-powered spacecraft technology.

Jared Isaacman, NASA’s chief, outlined the agency’s strategy in Washington DC, emphasizing the goal of establishing a lunar base before the end of President Trump’s term. The agency is working on standardizing rocket configurations, planning additional missions, and ensuring regular lunar landings in the coming years.

Private companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin are also in a race to develop lunar landers for upcoming missions. NASA is aware of China’s efforts to establish a manned moon base and aims to claim the south polar region for its own base, leveraging potential ice resources for water and fuel. Progress is already underway at the Kennedy Space Center for Artemis III’s docking tests.

Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart praised the lunar module experience in low-Earth orbit, while acknowledging the significance of moonwalkers in public perception. Artemis II made history by including diverse crew members, hailed for their communication skills. Author Andy Chaikin reflected on the progress made since the Apollo era, noting the significant advancements in space exploration.
