British traveler stranded in Sri Lanka after motorcycle accident

A British traveler is marooned overseas following a motorcycle accident shortly after embarking on his journey due to a minor issue with his insurance coverage.

Alex Muncey, aged 33, arrived in Colombo, Sri Lanka, for what was supposed to be a ten-week dream vacation but encountered a nightmare on his first day. Just three hours after landing, while en route from the airport to his accommodation, he was involved in a collision with a lorry overtaking on a blind curve, resulting in severe injuries.

Hailing from Cambridgeshire, the Brit sustained a brain hemorrhage, three fractures in his right arm, and four fractures in his right leg. His family is now striving to bring him back home.

His partner, Helen Garrod, 31, revealed that although Alex had travel insurance, it only covered motorcycles up to 125cc, whereas he had rented a 250cc bike. Helen expressed her distress, stating, “He had been planning a life-time adventure trip. He was out there for three hours, it’s so devastating.”

Heart-wrenching images depicted the self-employed builder in a hospital bed, encased in plaster with metal pins inserted into his leg. He has undergone surgery to place an external fixator on his leg and is scheduled for a skin and muscle graft.

To assist with the hefty medical expenses and repatriation costs potentially reaching £40,000, Helen and Alex’s relatives have launched a GoFundMe campaign.

Helen emphasized, “He was under the impression that his insurance covered any activity and that being on a motorbike would be covered. He has a full motorbike license and has ridden for nine years so he’s a very sensible driver.”

With the need for a medically staffed flight home estimated at £30,000 to £40,000, Alex faces significant financial burdens in addition to his ongoing medical treatments.
