“Air New Zealand Introduces Economy Skynest™ Sleep Pods”

Long-distance travel offers the opportunity for exciting adventures in far-off lands, but the downside often involves enduring long hours confined to a cramped airplane seat while struggling to adapt to the new time zone upon arrival.

For those willing to splurge, upgrading to business or first class provides access to luxurious lie-flat beds. However, this premium option comes with a hefty price tag, making it financially out of reach for many travelers.

In a bid to cater to a wider range of passengers, an airline has introduced a more affordable alternative that can be enjoyed by both economy and premium economy travelers as an optional add-on. Air New Zealand is launching Economy Skynest™ on their ultra long-haul flights between New York and Auckland, starting from May 18 with full service availability expected from November this year.

Described as “the world’s first sleep pods in the sky,” Skynest features six individual lie-flat nests that can be reserved for four-hour slots during the flight. Given the extended duration of flights on this route, which can span up to 18 hours, passengers can benefit from some much-needed rest and relaxation in these pods, offering a welcome break from the traditional economy class seating.

Each Skynest booking includes a complimentary amenity kit containing essentials like an eye mask and earplugs, with bed linens replaced between passengers to ensure hygiene. The pods are equipped with a seatbelt to allow uninterrupted sleep even if the seatbelt sign illuminates, along with a USB charging outlet and a small reading light for added convenience.

Pricing for a session in Skynest starts from $495 New Zealand Dollars, approximately £215, making it a premium upgrade that still remains more cost-effective than flying in a premium cabin.

This initiative is not the first time Air New Zealand has enhanced the travel experience for economy passengers. In 2011, they introduced Skycouch, which allows passengers to book a row that converts into a lie-flat bed for added comfort on long journeys. The Skycouch option is available on selected routes served by Boeing 777-300ER or 787-9 aircraft, with prices varying based on route and availability, ranging from NZ$525 to $1,500 per row (approximately £228 to £652).

Looking ahead, United Airlines plans to launch a similar product called Relax Rows in 2027, while Lufthansa already offers the option of a Sleeper Row on flights lasting over 11 hours, demonstrating a growing trend towards enhancing passenger comfort during long-haul flights.
