Keir Starmer is urging more fathers to share their insights on ensuring children’s safety on the internet. The Government’s consultation on safeguarding kids online has received close to 50,000 responses, with a notable discrepancy in participation between mothers and fathers, as revealed by the Prime Minister.

This call for action precedes the upcoming Childhood in the Age of AI summit, set for Monday, where Technology Secretary Liz Kendall and the NSPCC will engage with young individuals to explore the impact of AI and technology on childhood experiences.

Speaking to the Mirror, Keir Starmer acknowledged the challenges of monitoring his own children’s online activities. He emphasized the significance of parental involvement in addressing online safety concerns, stressing the need for social media platforms to enhance their efforts promptly.

Highlighting the crucial role of fathers in shaping online safety measures, Starmer emphasized the importance of parental engagement in guiding the future of online spaces for children. He urged fathers to actively contribute their perspectives to the ongoing consultation to create a safer digital environment for the younger generation.

Recent discussions at Downing Street with technology giants Meta, Snap, Google, TikTok, and X underscored the necessity for substantial changes in online safety protocols. The Technology Secretary urged more young people to participate in the consultation before its conclusion in five weeks, noting the limited input from children thus far.

The forthcoming summit at Wilton Park in Sussex will convene policymakers, tech industry representatives, and online safety advocates to further address these critical issues. Liz Kendall reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the online safety of youth and solicited their firsthand insights to inform future actions and improvements in online environments.

The government’s proactive stance on online safety initiatives signifies a concerted effort to address digital risks and enhance protections for children in the ever-evolving technological landscape.
