Fashion accessories retailer Claires has officially shut down its 154 stores in the UK and Ireland, resulting in approximately 1,300 job losses, according to administrators.
Kroll, the appointed administrators, confirmed that all remaining Claires stores have ceased operations, and employees have been informed about the redundancy situation. However, concession outlets and European stores under the chain will continue to operate at present.
In a statement, Kroll highlighted that as of April 27th, all standalone Claires stores in the UK and Ireland have stopped trading, with employees notified of their job losses. There are ongoing discussions with potential interested parties regarding new leases for some of the store locations.
Last year, Mayfair financiers Modella Capital, who acquired 156 Claires stores in the UK and Ireland, mentioned the inevitability of store closures and job cuts following the acquisition. However, they emphasized the potential to save over 1,000 jobs that would have otherwise been lost.
In January this year, the UK branch of Claires went into administration due to challenging retail conditions exacerbated by government policies. Modella Capital previously expressed concerns about the adverse impacts affecting British retailers like Claires.
There are growing concerns about the future of TJ Jones, previously known as the WH Smith high street business, which is reportedly preparing for a significant restructuring that may lead to numerous store closures.
The closure of the 154 Claires stores does not impact the company’s 356 concessions, including those situated in Asda stores, and its head office.
Fashion expert Priya Raj highlighted a shift in consumer trends away from colorful, novelty jewelry, which was Claires’ signature style. Teens today are more influenced by social media for their purchase decisions, moving towards minimalistic and curated jewelry styles rather than the traditional cutesy and juvenile offerings of Claires.
Recent reports have indicated the closure of several Claires stores in different locations, including Cheshire Oaks, Sutton Coldfield, Stockport, Watford, and Bangor.
