“The Family Chat Campaign Promotes Online Safety”

In today’s world, striking a balance between screen time and quality family interactions can be a challenging task that many families face on a daily basis. With children using electronic devices for various purposes such as learning, socializing, gaming, and entertainment, determining a reasonable limit on screen time has become increasingly complex.

To address this issue, a campaign called The Family Chat, launched in partnership with Tesco Mobile, aims to promote open and honest discussions within families about online safety throughout 2026. Author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher is engaging with parents and children to explore the challenges they encounter, how they are addressing them, and the valuable online safety resources provided by Tesco Mobile.

One of the resources available is a downloadable family pledge that encourages families to establish simple guidelines regarding healthy screen time habits and ensuring children’s safety online. Giovanna Fletcher emphasizes the importance of regularly reviewing and adjusting rules, highlighting the need to prevent excessive phone usage and encouraging children to explore diverse interests and activities.

For the Karley family, consisting of parents Anna and Emmanuel and their three teenagers, phones play a crucial role in staying connected, managing school responsibilities, and navigating their busy schedules. However, with the teenagers often engrossed in their devices, Anna and Emmanuel are eager to educate the family about screen time in an engaging and positive manner.

To facilitate discussions, the Karleys participated in the Team Mum v Team Dad Online Safety Challenge. Divided into two teams, they completed various challenges without using their phones, including ranking screen-based activities against offline pursuits like cooking and reading. After completing the challenges, the family committed to implementing what they had learned by filling out Tesco Mobile’s family pledge, focusing on screen time management, privacy, and responsible sharing.

Moving forward, Anna and Emmanuel plan to leverage the expert advice and resources available on Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub to help their family strike a balance between digital engagement and real-world connections. They have already implemented a phones-down rule at 9.30pm to enhance family bonding time, engaging in activities like quizzes together.

In addition to these efforts, families are encouraged to be vigilant about online content, watching out for sensational headlines, suspicious websites, and misinformation. Teaching children to verify social media accounts and engaging in fact-checking activities can empower them to navigate the online world safely and responsibly.
