“Parliament to Question Dismissal of Official Over Mandelson Clearance”

The dismissal of the top Foreign Office official involved in the approval of security clearance for Peter Mandelson is set to be scrutinized by Members of Parliament on Tuesday.

Sir Olly Robbins will be questioned by the Foreign Affairs Committee regarding the decision to grant clearance to the former US ambassador, despite concerns raised during the vetting process.

During Sir Olly’s tenure as the Foreign Office’s chief civil servant, a choice was made to override recommendations from UK Security Vetting to enable Mandelson to secure a prominent position.

Number 10 clarified that Keir Starmer was unaware of Mandelson’s initial clearance denial. In response to allegations of misleading the Parliament, the Prime Minister initiated an urgent investigation into the approval process. The upcoming interrogation by MPs follows the Prime Minister’s scheduled appearance in the Commons to address the controversy.

Following Sir Olly’s dismissal, a former Whitehall official, Lord Simon McDonald, accused the government of unfairly scapegoating him without due process. McDonald criticized the use of the term “failed” to describe the vetting outcome, emphasizing the nuanced nature of security evaluations.

Keir Starmer has faced mounting criticism for appointing Lord Mandelson as the UK’s representative in Washington. Mandelson, a controversial figure with ties to past Prime Ministers Gordon Brown and Tony Blair, was tasked with managing diplomatic relations with then-President Donald Trump. However, his tenure was short-lived as revelations about his association with Epstein led to his dismissal.
