“Passengers Forced to Deplane for Weight Issue on EasyJet Flight”

Several passengers aboard an EasyJet flight were shocked when the pilot announced that five individuals needed to disembark for the plane to be able to take off. The incident occurred on a flight from Southend Airport to Malaga on April 11. According to witnesses, the pilot mentioned that the aircraft was too heavy and threatened to leave luggage behind if the weight issue was not resolved.

Kelly Wayand, an independent travel agent who was onboard, expressed disbelief at the situation, stating that she initially thought it was a joke. The pilot informed passengers that six individuals needed to leave the plane or all luggage would be left behind in Southend. Eventually, five passengers volunteered to deplane, allowing the flight to proceed.

Another passenger, Carly Mowbray, shared that those who left the aircraft received applause from the remaining passengers. The flight, operated by an Airbus A319, was delayed due to the weight constraints but eventually departed after the necessary adjustments were made.

In response to the incident, EasyJet clarified that the weight restrictions were due to weather conditions and the short runway at Southend Airport. The airline arranged alternative travel for the volunteers on later flights to Malaga from London Gatwick, free of charge, and stated that compensation would be provided in adherence to regulations.

Passengers affected by such situations are entitled to compensation under UK261 regulations. Depending on the duration of the delay, compensation can range from £175 to £350 for medium-haul flights like the one from Southend to Malaga. EasyJet emphasized that passenger and crew safety is their top priority in all situations.
