Snooker’s new world champion, Wu Yize, has expressed his heartfelt intention to use his prize money to purchase a home and take his parents on a trip. The 22-year-old secured his first world title by defeating Shaun Murphy 10-6 at The Crucible on Monday.
Apart from claiming the prestigious trophy, Wu now possesses a substantial £500,000 in prize money. He revealed his plans during an interview with SportsBoom, stating, “I want to buy a house and travel with my parents. There are many things I wish to acquire. My parents are my true heroes, the pillar of my strength. I hold deep affection for them.”
While Wu has outlined his initial intentions for the prize money, it seems that he currently prioritizes getting some rest. He mentioned, “I just want to have a good sleep. I was anxious throughout the entire match, and now I simply want to hit the bed.”
Reflecting on his triumph, Wu emphasized the significance of his mother in his life, particularly during her ongoing health struggles. He shared, “My mother has been unwell for a while. While we were in Sheffield, she spent a lot of time in the hospital. She is a constant source of support for me.”
He added, “She is much better now. This is her second visit to the UK. I plan to have her by my side more often in the future. She made numerous sacrifices for me. She once said, ‘Do not come back home, I can manage everything.’ It was my second year playing in the UK.”
Jason Ferguson, the chairman of snooker’s governing body, praised Wu’s achievements, highlighting the perseverance and dedication shown by Wu and his family. He remarked, “Wu’s success holds immense significance for his family. Witnessing him hold that trophy in the arena is truly remarkable. We are witnessing a shift in the sport, with Wu entering an era where he can continue to excel.”
