Lidl has introduced a significant change to its loyalty program, allowing customers to accrue points based on their spending. Users of Lidl Plus will now earn one point for every £1 they spend in-store, which can later be converted into vouchers for free items or as discounts on purchases.
For instance, a check on the Lidl Plus app today showed that 100 points could be exchanged for a complimentary cucumber, plain tortilla wraps, or houmous. With 200 points, customers can redeem a free halloumi or Greek yoghurt, while 300 points will give them a £3 discount on their next shopping trip. Accumulating 500 points will result in a £5 discount.
These points remain valid for two years and have replaced the previous rewards for reaching monthly spending thresholds, where customers received free bakery treats, fresh vegetables, or discounts based on their spending levels.
Additionally, Lidl Plus continues to offer personalized discount coupons on selected products. To redeem points, users need to visit the Rewards Marketplace section within the Lidl Plus app and select their desired reward.
According to a Lidl spokesperson, the new system offers customers more flexibility, although some rewards may require higher spending compared to the previous scheme. For example, currently, customers can obtain a free brownie in exchange for 90 points, equivalent to a £90 spending requirement.
Lidl’s chief customer officer, Louise Weise, emphasized that the new loyalty program aims to provide customers with more control and diverse reward options tailored to their preferences and needs. She highlighted the variability in customer preferences and the importance of offering a range of rewards to cater to different individuals.
To kick off the revised loyalty scheme, Lidl Plus is granting all app users 100 complimentary points. Additionally, customers will receive double points for any fruit purchases made until May 22.
