A man identified as Shamar Elkins, aged 31, is the alleged perpetrator of a tragic incident where eight children, ranging from one to 12 years old, lost their lives in a shooting. This event marks the deadliest mass shooting in the United States in over two years.
According to authorities speaking to KSLA, Elkins is believed to be the father of some of the victims among the ten individuals who were shot. Two women managed to survive the terrifying attack, with one sustaining life-threatening injuries, including a gunshot wound to the head.
The horrifying incident transpired on a Sunday morning when the gunman targeted a location in Shreveport where the devastating killings occurred. Subsequently, Elkins drove to Harrison Street, approximately a quarter-mile away, leading to a high-speed pursuit by law enforcement following a carjacking. The pursuit ended when Elkins was shot and killed by police at a third location.
A resident named Liza Demming, living nearby, recounted capturing footage of the suspect fleeing the scene along with the sound of gunshots on her security camera. She later discovered the covered body of a child on a neighboring roof, expressing shock as the suspect had interacted with the children just days prior.
The community, along with law enforcement, is grappling with the aftermath of this tragedy, which stands as the deadliest mass shooting since a similar incident in a Chicago suburb in January 2024. The Shreveport Police Department’s spokesperson, Chris Bordelon, described the scene as unprecedented and distressing for all involved.
Following the shooting, officials appeared visibly shaken, urging patience and support from the community as they navigated through multiple crime scenes. Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith and Mayor Tom Arceneaux expressed profound sorrow and disbelief at the magnitude of the tragedy, emphasizing the need for unity in such challenging times.
Louisiana State Police have been called in to assist in the investigation, with a particular focus on the police pursuit that led to the suspect’s demise. Governor Jeff Landry and US House Speaker Mike Johnson extended their heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families, commending law enforcement for their swift response to the incident.
As the community mourns the loss of innocent lives, State Police have appealed to the public for any relevant information, photos, or videos that could aid in the ongoing investigation. The call for unity and support echoes across the city of Shreveport during this somber period.
