Farage had previously criticized the scrutiny on his finances as a targeted attack by the establishment and the media. His attempt to resign and re-run backfired when other parties declined to participate, resulting in a diverse field of independent and minor-party candidates, including satirical contenders like Howling Laud Hope and Marcus White.
