At the Pan Pacific championships in Irvine, California, Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh had contrasting performances on Friday night.
Ruck secured a silver medal in the women’s 100m butterfly event and later added a bronze as part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, bringing her total medal count to five in the competition. She achieved a personal best time of 56.71 seconds in the 100m butterfly, finishing second behind American Gretchen Walsh.
Meanwhile, McIntosh expressed frustration after winning the B final of the women’s 400m freestyle but failing to qualify for the A final due to a misjudgment in the morning heats. McIntosh took full responsibility for the error and vowed to learn from it.
In other events, Canadian swimmers Blake Tierney and Ethan Ekk claimed silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m backstroke. Tierney highlighted the significance of both athletes being on the podium, emphasizing their hard work paying off.
Ruck continued her success by guiding Canada to a bronze medal in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay alongside her teammates. The U.S. team clinched gold in the event, while Australia secured silver.
Despite McIntosh’s disappointment, she aims to refocus for the upcoming events, including the 200m IM where she holds world records and titles. The Canadian swimmers showcased their talent and determination at the championships, with Ruck standing out with her impressive medal haul.
