Madonna, the queen of pop, is poised to reclaim her throne at the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards. With a remarkable 11 nominations this year, Madonna has secured the top spot, surpassing even Taylor Swift. This marks the third time in her career that Madonna has emerged as the most nominated artist at the VMAs.
The nominations for Madonna’s acclaimed album “Confessions II” and its corresponding film have garnered her nods for categories such as artist of the year and video of the year. Taylor Swift, who holds the title for the most awarded solo artist in VMA history, follows closely behind with nine nominations for her album “The Life of a Showgirl” and the music video for “The Fate of Ophelia.” Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande trail Swift with seven nominations each.
Madonna has a history of leading the VMAs nominations, having previously done so in 1990 and 1998 during her “Vogue” and “Ray of Light” eras. Notably, Madonna’s iconic performance at the inaugural 1984 ceremony, where she donned a wedding dress and a “Boy Toy” belt buckle while singing “Like a Virgin,” is still etched in VMA history.
Among Madonna’s nominations are video of the year, artist of the year, and song and collaboration of the year for “Bring Your Love,” featuring fellow nominee Carpenter. In the highly anticipated video of the year category, Madonna’s “Confessions” will be competing against Swift’s “Ophelia,” Grande’s “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” Carpenter’s “Tears,” Bruno Mars’s “I Just Might,” and Gener8ion and Yung Lean’s “Storm.”
Voting for 13 categories this year is open to the public, with the winners set to be revealed during the live broadcast of the ceremony on September 27, airing on CBS, MTV, and streaming on Paramount+.
