A decade has passed since The Tragically Hip’s final performance in Kingston, Ontario, but Paul Langlois admits he is still processing the momentous event. Reflecting on the 10-year milestone in an interview with CBC’s Eli Glasner on “The National,” the guitarist expressed disbelief at how time has flown since their farewell show.
The atmosphere was poignant as lead singer Gord Downie bid adieu to a packed crowd at Kingston’s Rogers K-Rock Centre (now known as Slush Puppi Place) in 2016. Tears flowed freely from fans and Downie alike as he delivered iconic hits like “Ahead by a Century” and “Bobcaygeon” for the last time.
Formed in 1984, The Tragically Hip released 13 studio albums before embarking on their final tour in 2016, culminating in the emotional hometown show on August 20. Downie’s battle with terminal brain cancer, diagnosed in December 2015, sadly ended with his passing at the age of 53 just over a year later.
To mark the 10th anniversary of the band’s farewell concert, CBC will rebroadcast the event on Saturday as part of the commemorative tribute.
