Approximately 1,200 employees at National Steel Car in Hamilton initiated a strike at midnight on Wednesday following their rejection of a contract proposal. United Steelworkers (USW) Local 7135 President, Frank Crowder, disclosed that a high turnout rate was observed during the Tuesday vote, with 91% participation and a 79% rejection rate for the contract.
Crowder highlighted that workers are advocating for increased wages and seeking union involvement in an incentive scheme deemed “risky.” He emphasized that the company’s wage offers do not even match inflation rates. Michael Schram, a welder and union representative at the facility, expressed dissatisfaction with his current income, citing insufficient pay to sustain a livelihood.
The contentious incentive program at National Steel Car allows employees to accept lower wages and receive an additional 25% of their pay if production targets are met. Crowder noted that while the program was historically managed fairly, recent unattainable production quotas have resulted in workers going without the bonus pay for extended periods, leading to substantial wage cuts.
The union previously engaged in a 41-day strike in 2023, culminating in a 13% salary hike. Crowder underscored the correlation between the incentive program and workplace incidents, pointing out that undue pressure to meet targets could lead to unsafe practices. He stressed the necessity of safeguarding workers’ wages from the program’s adverse impacts.
Despite the union’s willingness to resume negotiations, National Steel Car refrained from commenting on the issue, citing unavailability of their spokesperson. The standoff persists as workers advocate for fairer compensation and improved workplace conditions.
