In the past, fans had a strong affinity for Matthew Perry’s character, Chandler Bing, throughout the popular TV show “Friends.” However, following his passing in 2023, many found it challenging to reconcile the news of his ketamine addiction with the beloved sitcom persona they knew so well.
Netflix has now announced a forthcoming three-part docuseries titled “The One About Matthew Perry,” promising a more comprehensive look at the life of the Canadian-born actor. The series will delve into Perry’s evolution from a rising comedic talent to his iconic role on the hit NBC show. It will feature exclusive testimonies from Perry’s inner circle, including his lifelong friends and his sister, Mia Perry Bowick, who is a grief specialist.
Bowick, who has openly shared her own grieving process after Perry’s death, expressed in a statement that it took time for her to be ready to reveal her memories and portray the multi-faceted aspects of Perry’s life beyond his on-screen persona and struggles with addiction.
Perry tragically passed away at the age of 54 due to a ketamine overdose in his backyard hot tub. Several individuals pleaded guilty to charges related to providing him with the drug, with one of them, Dr. Salvador Plasencia, who supplied Perry with ketamine, currently appealing his 30-month prison sentence.
The upcoming docuseries by Netflix aims to provide not only fond recollections from Perry’s loved ones but also new insights into his personal challenges, aiming to uphold his legacy of transparency and advocacy. The series is set to premiere on October 27.
