“Texas AG Probes Fruit of the Loom, Hanes Chemicals”

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated a probe to investigate if Fruit of the Loom and Hanes utilize harmful chemicals in the production of children’s undergarments. Paxton issued civil investigative demands to both companies, expressing concerns about the potential impact of these chemicals on children’s well-being. Neither company has been accused of any misconduct.

While Fruit of the Loom and Berkshire Hathaway have not yet responded to Reuters’ requests for comments, Gildan, the parent company of Hanes, has stated its commitment to cooperating with the investigation. Gildan emphasized its adherence to stringent manufacturing and sourcing standards to align with industry regulations concerning hazardous substances.

Paxton highlighted a trend among clothing manufacturers shifting towards synthetic materials like polyester, rayon, and spandex to meet consumer demands for more affordable products. Studies indicate that synthetic fabrics may release microplastics, and chemicals such as bisphenols, fluorine, parabens, phthalates, and persistent “forever chemicals” used in textile production have been linked to various health issues, including cancer and hormone disruption.

The term “forever chemicals” refers to PFAS, which stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. Paxton emphasized the importance of safeguarding children from potential harm caused by toxic chemicals in everyday products.

In a separate investigation earlier this year, Paxton probed Vancouver-based Lululemon Athletica to determine the presence of “forever chemicals” in their activewear. The Attorney General, a Republican, is currently in a U.S. Senate race against Democrat James Talarico and is trailing in most polls. This race is closely monitored as one of the key contests in the upcoming Nov. 3 midterm elections.
