U.S. military forces carried out an operation on Sunday targeting Iranian rocket launchers in the Strait of Hormuz, marking the first military action in over a month and leading to a swift Iranian response. The incident disrupted a period of relative calm in the ongoing conflict that has spanned more than six months.
According to an anonymous official, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was observed preparing to deploy rockets armed with sea mines in the strait. The U.S. military recently completed a mission to clear sea mines from the international shipping lanes in the area.
Reports from semi-official Iranian news sources indicated hearing explosions near Larak Island in the strait. Subsequently, Iranian state television aired footage purportedly showing ballistic missiles launched by Iran targeting U.S. bases in Jordan in retaliation to the U.S. strikes. Jordan’s military intercepted eight missiles that breached the country’s airspace early Monday.
U.S. military officials refuted Iran’s assertion that the American strikes were aggressive, describing them as a “limited, precise action” directed at thwarting alleged minelaying activities. The U.S. Central Command emphasized that the military’s response aimed to safeguard civilian mariners, commercial shipping, and the uninterrupted flow of global trade.
The escalation follows the Trump administration’s recent shift towards employing economic sanctions as a primary tool to pressure Iran, signaling a departure from a focus on military operations. Concerns have been raised about diminishing munitions supplies and the potential impact on U.S. military readiness elsewhere due to the protracted conflict.
President Trump’s rhetoric on swiftly resolving the conflict with Iran has tempered, with indications that negotiations are not a priority at the moment. Trump has highlighted the impact of the U.S. and Israeli campaign on Iran’s military capabilities, while Iranian officials have cited significant financial losses due to the conflict.
Despite assertions by Trump that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, maritime traffic through the strategic waterway has significantly decreased. Iran’s ability to disrupt vessel movements in the area, where a substantial portion of global oil trade typically flows, underscores its leverage in the conflict.
Recent incidents, including an unknown projectile striking a tanker ship north of Khasab, Oman, have further heightened tensions in the region. Commercial traffic through the strait has been reported at reduced levels, underscoring the ongoing challenges and risks associated with the critical maritime passage.
