Williams Sisters Reunite for U.S. Open Doubles

Serena and Venus Williams have joined forces once again for the upcoming U.S. Open. The renowned sisters secured a wild card entry into the tournament, where they have previously triumphed twice in the doubles category.

Serena Williams made her return to the tennis scene this summer following a hiatus of four years. Initially slated to compete together at Wimbledon, the plan was foiled when Serena sustained a knee injury during a singles match, necessitating her withdrawal. Their subsequent participation at the Cincinnati Open saw them exiting in the initial round.

Having clinched the U.S. Open doubles titles in 1999 and 2009, the Williams sisters boast an impressive record of 27 wins out of 9 appearances. Their most recent outing in 2022 ended in a first-round defeat, marking what was anticipated to be Serena’s farewell match at Flushing Meadows.

During the mixed doubles event, Serena, aged 44, partnered with Carlos Alcaraz, securing a victory before bowing out in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Venus, aged 46, is gearing up for the women’s singles competition.

Accumulating 14 Grand Slam doubles championships along with Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2008, and 2012, the Williams siblings also shared the top spot in the women’s doubles rankings for a span of eight weeks.

While Serena has decided against competing in the singles division at the U.S. Open, where she has claimed six of her 23 Grand Slam singles titles, she has expressed readiness to participate in both doubles events.

Their inaugural U.S. Open doubles victory coincided with Serena’s maiden singles triumph at the same event, with their peak dominance as a duo materializing around a decade later. Noteworthy victories in 2009 at the Australian Open and Wimbledon preceded their subsequent U.S. Open title in the same year. Success continued with an Australian Open win in 2010, coupled with a triumph at the French Open, establishing the sisters as holders of all four major trophies at the time.

The commencement of the women’s doubles tournament is scheduled for September 3rd.
