“Alberta Removes Protections, Endangering Sage Grouse”

Share

The Alberta government has recently eliminated habitat protections for the endangered greater sage grouse, removing safeguards in designated areas. This move, made through amendments to the Public Lands Act in July, has put the remaining population of these birds at direct risk of extinction. The greater sage grouse is recognized as an endangered species by both the Alberta and federal governments, with fewer than 100 birds estimated to be left in Alberta, mainly restricted to the southeastern part of the province.

The population of greater sage grouse in Alberta has experienced a staggering 98% decline from 1968 to 2012 due to habitat loss and industrial development, leaving the species occupying only about seven percent of its historical range. University of Alberta ecology professor Mark Boyce, a long-time advocate for greater sage grouse conservation, expressed grave concern over the removal of provincial protections, stating that it endangers the survival of the species in Alberta.

The decision to lift these protections has raised significant alarm among conservationists, with Joshua Killeen from the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society’s southern Alberta chapter highlighting the detrimental impact on decades of conservation efforts. Without habitat protection, the chances of the species surviving are greatly diminished, potentially leading to their complete disappearance from Alberta and even Canada.

In response to criticism, Alberta Environment and Protected Areas communications director Andrew Livingstone defended the changes, emphasizing the need to balance conservation efforts with economic development. The province is said to be investing in various recovery initiatives, including programs for habitat restoration, predator management, and enhanced monitoring, to support the recovery of the endangered species.

Although federal protections for a portion of Alberta’s greater sage grouse habitat remain in place, the removal of provincial safeguards poses a significant threat to the species’s survival. The helium industry, which pushed for the removal of habitat protections, has been granted approvals in designated greater sage grouse habitat, raising concerns about the impact of industrial activities on the already vulnerable population.

The decision to eliminate habitat protections has sparked controversy, with environmentalists and experts warning of the dire consequences for the future of the greater sage grouse population in Alberta. Despite assurances from industry representatives and government officials, the fate of these endangered birds remains uncertain in the face of ongoing industrial development in their habitat.
