Bagpiper in Ottawa Faces Violent Attack, Receives Support

Kevin Murison elicits various reactions when he performs on a bustling sidewalk in Ottawa over the weekends, with most being positive. Murison, 35, often busks in full Highland attire on the bridge near the Ottawa Locks, receiving numerous compliments on his playing skills. Despite encountering a few individuals who covered their ears, the majority of passersby express admiration for his bagpipe performance.

While playing his bagpipes last year, an emotional tourist from Brazil was moved to tears and even offered her contact details for a potential visit to South America. Conversely, there was an unpleasant encounter where a man demanded Murison to stop playing, resulting in an altercation where the man threw a drink at him and stole money from his open case.

However, a recent incident on a Saturday afternoon left Murison with four stitches in his thumb and a significant gash in his bagpipe bag. During his usual performance, a man approached Murison under the pretense of taking a photo but then revealed a knife, leading to a violent confrontation that resulted in Murison sustaining injuries.

Following the attack, a bystander alerted authorities, leading to a swift police response. The suspect, a 25-year-old man, was apprehended nearby and is now facing multiple charges, including assault with a weapon and breaching probation. Ottawa police described the attack as unprovoked.

Despite the ordeal, Murison remains passionate about playing the bagpipes, a tradition he embraced around 15 years ago. He speculates on the motives behind the attack, surmising that the bagpipes may have been the primary target rather than himself. Murison expressed gratitude for the support he has received, particularly from his band and the wider bagpiping community.

While recovering from his injuries, Murison anticipates returning to his musical pursuits once he regains full mobility in his thumb. Despite the harrowing experience, Murison remains determined not to be deterred and plans to resume his performances once he has fully recuperated.
