“BBC Faces Criticism Over Handling of Scott Mills Allegations”

Share

The BBC had prior knowledge of the allegations against Scott Mills nearly a year ago but did not initiate an investigation. In May 2025, a former presenter reached out to the network with details of purported “inappropriate communications” involving the radio personality, but did not receive a response.

Scott Mills’ dismissal by the BBC is linked to a 2016 police inquiry into “serious sexual offenses” against a teenage boy. Although Mills was questioned by the police under caution, the case was closed due to insufficient evidence. However, it is understood that his termination is connected to this specific incident.

The network stated that Mills’s contract was terminated promptly upon learning of the allegations. Yet, according to The Telegraph, a former BBC presenter contacted the BBC in May 2025 regarding alleged “inappropriate communications” involving Mills, but did not receive a reply.

Anna Brees, who also inquired if there were any complaints about Mills related to safeguarding, misconduct, or harassment, did not receive a response from the network. She stated that a source informed her about Mills sending inappropriate messages, prompting her to notify the BBC, but received no feedback.

The matters raised by Ms. Brees are not believed to pertain to the same victim whose report in 2018 led to the police interview with Mills.

In a statement to The Telegraph, the broadcaster expressed regret and acknowledged the need for follow-up. They admitted to mishandling a press query in 2025 and pledged to investigate the oversight. The BBC encouraged individuals with concerns or information to come forward.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson disclosed that an investigation into serious sexual offenses against a teenage boy between 1997 and 2000 was conducted from December 2016 to May 2019. Despite questioning Mills in 2018, the Crown Prosecution Service did not find sufficient evidence to press charges, resulting in the case closure.
