“Bristol’s Oldest Banksy Artwork Faces Sale”

Share

The oldest remaining artwork attributed to Banksy in Bristol may soon be available for art enthusiasts as the building housing it is being prepared for sale. Wellspring Settlement, the property owner and a key community center, is facing financial difficulties and is making arrangements to offload the site, which once hosted the ‘Dug Out’ youth club frequented by the enigmatic artist in his early days.

Wellspring Settlement plays a vital role in the Barton Hill neighborhood, offering a range of services such as baby and toddler play sessions, a food club, financial counseling, and social gatherings for adults. Additionally, the center supports youth programs and provides space for various local charities and groups.

Having also nurtured a young Banksy before he rose to fame as the world’s most renowned anonymous artist, the community center’s sale will mark the end of its role in providing a space for Bristol’s youth and will transfer a piece of art history to a new owner. Currently, the sizable Barton Hill building houses a local amateur boxing club, which will need to relocate once the property changes ownership.

In a heartfelt message to the Barton Hill residents, Wellspring candidly shared their financial challenges. The charity expressed the need to make tough choices due to the substantial costs of maintaining the building surpassing the rent received from the boxing club, which has been a valuable asset to the community for the past decade.

To address their financial struggles, trustees have decided to list the building for sale to explore potential buyers and stabilize their finances. They reassured the community of their commitment to supporting the boxing club throughout the transition and are actively working with the club’s coaches to find suitable alternative premises for their operations.

Despite the community’s strong attachment to the building, Wellspring aims to be transparent as they progress through this process. While acknowledging the challenges ahead, they remain optimistic about securing a future for both the charity and the boxing club to continue delivering positive outcomes for the community.
