Budget airline easyJet is set to introduce a new summer route from London Gatwick to Newquay, providing travelers with convenient access to the picturesque beaches of Cornwall. The route will enable passengers to reach the stunning Cornish coastline in just over an hour, avoiding traffic congestion.
Renowned for its golden sands and ideal surfing conditions, Newquay boasts popular beaches like Fistral Beach, where surfers can often be seen mastering the waves. Additionally, smaller coves such as Tolcarne Beach offer perfect waves for bodyboarding, surrounded by scenic cliffs. Porth Beach, located on the outskirts of town, provides a tranquil spot with relatively calm waters, ideal for families with its lifeguard patrols and quaint seaside cafes.
Commencing on June 23, easyJet will operate the new route until August 29, offering one-way tickets starting from £30.99. Flights will run twice a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays throughout the peak summer season, catering to both leisure and business travelers seeking a faster and more affordable travel option.
Despite the convenience of air travel, the route has sparked a debate regarding environmental impact. Comparing carbon emissions, a train journey from London Paddington to Newquay emits significantly less CO2 than a car or flight, pointing towards a more eco-friendly transportation choice. However, the speed and cost-effectiveness of the flight may attract travelers looking for quick getaways or business trips.
Kevin Doyle, easyJet’s UK Country Manager, expressed enthusiasm about the new route, emphasizing enhanced connectivity for customers in London and the South East wishing to explore Cornwall. Cornwall Airport Newquay’s Commercial Director, Nigel Scott, also welcomed the service, highlighting the growing demand for travel to Cornwall and the route’s affordability during peak seasons.
The launch of the London Gatwick to Newquay route comes as Skybus services supported by Cornwall Council have been terminated due to rising costs and decreased bookings. This shift in air services underscores the importance of maintaining accessibility to Cornwall, a region that continues to draw visitors from various parts of the UK and abroad.
Newquay Airport, which saw over 407,609 passengers in 2024, offers a diverse range of flight options, including services by airlines like Aer Lingus and Ryanair. With existing routes to popular destinations like Malaga, Alicante, and Faro, the airport remains a key gateway for travelers exploring both domestic and international destinations.
