Iconic British Car Dealership Cargiant to Close Amid Market Challenges

Share

A renowned British car dealership is on the verge of shutting down after being a leading player in the UK’s thriving second-hand car market. London-based Cargiant will permanently close its operations in the capital by April 24 as efforts to find a suitable buyer have fallen through. The company, once boasting a vast inventory of over 2,000 vehicles, stood out as one of the busiest used car outlets in Britain.

Spanning approximately 50 acres, the site holds an estimated value of £100 million and is strategically positioned near a planned HS2 interchange that will seamlessly connect HS2, the Elizabeth Line, overground, and other transit networks.

Facing challenges in recent times, Cargiant’s directors have been actively seeking to offload the business and land. The impending closure comes as a result of the owners’ inability to secure a sustainable future for the company.

In 2025, the firm reported a noteworthy pre-tax profit of £121.2 million after a land revaluation, rebounding from a pre-tax loss of £22.4 million in 2023, as reported by the Express.

In a statement to Car Dealer, a spokesperson expressed deep regret over the closure of Cargiant’s retail operations, following an extensive consultation period with the staff to explore all potential avenues for the business’s survival.

Despite diligent efforts, the decision was made that the current form of the business is no longer financially viable. This conclusion was influenced by various factors, including a diminishing supply of used vehicles due to the EV mandate, escalating operational expenses, and growing complexities in the used car market.

Having been a cornerstone of the UK motor industry for over 50 years, Cargiant played a pivotal role in pioneering the used car supermarket concept and evolving into the country’s largest independent car dealership. Throughout its history, the company has facilitated the sale of over one million vehicles and has been instrumental in fostering numerous careers within the automotive sector and beyond.
