The International Swimming League (ISL) is set to make a comeback after a five-year break with an All-Star Match scheduled for December 19 at the London Aquatics Centre, as announced by the league. This event, featuring top swimmers from around the globe, will offer a significant prize pool, with specific details to be disclosed later. Previous ISL competitions have showcased renowned athletes like Caeleb Dressel from the United States, Adam Peaty from Britain, and Katinka Hosszu from Hungary.
The upcoming match in London marks a pivotal step towards the league’s anticipated full revival, following plans initially outlined by ISL Commissioner Ben Allen last year. The league aims to relaunch in autumn 2026 with a revamped commercial strategy focused on diversifying revenue sources through sponsorships and media partnerships, reducing reliance on individual investors.
Launched in 2019 to introduce a professional competition outside the Olympic cycle, the ISL’s last full season took place in 2021 before facing disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and challenges linked to its primary supporter, Ukrainian businessman Konstantin Grigorishin.
In a bid to revitalize its operations, the ISL is considering a condensed season featuring seven matches across North America, Europe, Asia, and potentially the Middle East. The league may also transition to a one-day event format following previous competitions held over two days.
In a gesture of goodwill, the league recently announced plans to settle overdue prize money for approximately 300 athletes from the 2021 season. The London event, positioned as an All-Star Match, will serve as a test for this streamlined approach before a broader relaunch.
ISL Commissioner Ben Allen expressed excitement about the upcoming event, stating, “The All-Star Match represents a significant moment for the world of swimming, bringing together top athletes on the ISL platform. London, with its outstanding venue and passionate sports enthusiasts, is an ideal host city for this occasion.”
The London Aquatics Centre, constructed for the 2012 Olympics, has a history of hosting major international swimming competitions. Further details regarding participating swimmers, match format, ticketing, and broadcast arrangements for the event will be released by the ISL in due course.
