Images have captured a large ash cloud ascending into the sky in the aftermath of a significant volcanic eruption that occurred today. The eruption took place at Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island in the Philippines around 6pm local time. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the explosion was classified as a “moderately explosive eruption.”

This event marks the third eruption on the mountain this year, leading to the issuance of Alert Level 2 in the region, with a 4km danger zone perimeter established for safety measures.

Kanlaon Volcano, situated on Negros Island, is renowned as one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines and holds the title of being the most active in the Central Philippines. It stands as the highest peak on Negros Island, approximately 36km southeast of Bacolod City, and is part of Kanlaon National Park.

Today’s eruption is the third instance of volcanic activity at Kanlaon Volcano within the past month, with all three eruptions categorized as ‘moderately explosive.’ The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported that the previous eruptions occurred on February 19 and February 26.

Locals have reported observing a plume of ash emanating from the volcano, accompanied by a noticeable sulfuric smell in the air. The 5km-high ash column has dispersed towards the southeast and northeast directions.

The recent eruption of Kanlaon Volcano in the Philippines adds to the series of volcanic activities this year. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology stated, “Another moderately explosive eruption occurred at the summit of Kanlaon Volcano at 06:07 PM today, generating a 5 kilometer-high eruption column that is drifting to the southeast and northeast. This is the third event at Kanlaon this year, following similar eruptions on 19 and 26 February 2026. Alert Level 2 is maintained over Kanlaon Volcano, and entry into the 4 kilometer PDZ (Permanent Danger Zone) must be prohibited.”
