“Man Charged After UK City Center Car-Pedestrian Collision”

Police have provided a significant update following a car-pedestrian collision in a city center in the UK over the weekend. Derbyshire Constabulary announced that a man has been charged in connection with the incident.

The authorities stated that a Suzuki Swift struck pedestrians on Friar Gate in Derby around 9:30 pm on Saturday, injuring seven people, some of them seriously. All seven individuals were transported to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, and four have already been discharged.

Sandhu Ponnachan, 36, residing in Chariot Close, Alvaston, faces charges including six counts of Section 18 GBH with intent, one count of attempted Section 18 GBH with intent, one count of dangerous driving, and one count of possession of a bladed article. Originally from India but currently living in Derby, Mr. Ponnachan has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Chief Superintendent Emma Aldred expressed that the incident has deeply affected Derby’s community and the entire county. She extended sympathies to the injured individuals, their families, and witnesses. Acknowledging the support received during the investigation, she urged anyone with information to come forward, especially those possessing CCTV, dashcam, or mobile phone footage relevant to the case.

Janine McKinney of the Crown Prosecution Service highlighted the decision to prosecute Sandhu Ponnachan on multiple charges after a thorough collaboration with Derbyshire Police. The prosecution deemed it necessary based on sufficient evidence and in the public interest to pursue legal action.
