Share

An Ontario man faced animal cruelty charges in a Las Vegas court for stealing a flamingo named Peachy from a hotel habitat. Mitchell Fairbarn was convicted of injuring the flamingo during a drunken incident. He pleaded not guilty but was found guilty on felony and misdemeanor counts, facing potential prison time. Fairbarn admitted to taking the bird as a joke after consuming a significant amount of alcohol.

The incident occurred at the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, where Fairbarn thought it would be amusing to show the flamingo to his friends. Witnesses testified that Fairbarn held the bird in an elevator and took it to his room, causing visible distress to Peachy. The flamingo suffered injuries, including missing feathers and blood loss, requiring medical treatment.

Fairbarn’s lawyer emphasized that his client’s actions were alcohol-induced and not intended to harm the bird. Despite regrets expressed in court, Fairbarn remained under house arrest awaiting sentencing. The flamingo, Peachy, has since recovered, with Caesars Entertainment ensuring the well-being of animals at the habitat.

Animal rights advocate John Waudby commended the justice served in Peachy’s case, highlighting the importance of protecting animals. The incident adds to a series of animal cruelty cases at Las Vegas casinos, indicating a need for stricter enforcement to prevent such occurrences in the future.
