Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson attributes his nickname to his lack of speed on the bases during his Little League days. Fast forward twelve years, Tugboat is making his Major League Baseball pitching debut with the San Francisco Giants, having been called up from the team’s triple-A farm club. He is set to take the mound as the starting pitcher against the Cleveland Guardians.
Jeff Duda, Wilkinson’s former coach from the Okotoks Dawgs Academy in Alberta, received the exciting news directly from the pitcher himself in a late-night phone call. Duda recounted how Wilkinson enthusiastically shared the news of his call-up, expressing both shock and excitement at the opportunity.
Wilkinson gained recognition for his pitching skills at a young age when he led White Rock to the 2015 Canadian Little League title, impressing at the Little League World Series. His talent was further showcased earlier this year at the World Baseball Classic, where he delivered a strong performance against formidable opponents.
Despite not fitting the typical physique of a major-league pitcher at 6-1 and 250 pounds, Wilkinson’s determination and competitive spirit set him apart. Described by Duda as having an insatiable drive to succeed, Wilkinson has consistently worked on improving his physical condition each off-season.
Selected by the Cleveland Guardians in the 10th round of the 2023 MLB draft, Wilkinson was traded to the Giants in May. With an impressive record in the minor leagues this season, including 96 strikeouts in 90 innings and a 3.40 ERA, Wilkinson is set to face his former team in his MLB debut.
Fans in Canada are eagerly anticipating Wilkinson’s debut at the highest level of baseball. Jordan Broatch, director of baseball operations at the White Rock South Surrey Baseball Association, praised Wilkinson’s talent and personality, emphasizing his consistent dominance on the mound.
Duda expressed his belief in Wilkinson’s potential to reach the big leagues and praised his determination in seizing the opportunity to showcase his skills at the highest level of professional baseball.
