“Mega-brothels Blamed for Extensive Human Trafficking in UK”

Online ‘mega-brothels’ that provide sexual services have been described as “crime scenes” responsible for orchestrating “the most extensive human trafficking operations in recent UK history,” according to statements made to ministers.

During a Westminster Hall debate, Labour MP Tracy Gilbert demanded the closure of adult services websites, which are currently operating within legal boundaries. She disclosed her communication with Scottish authorities to investigate two companies, Adultwork and Vivastreet.

Gilbert emphasized that these websites are enabling large-scale exploitation, stating, “My plea to Westminster Ministers is clear: shut down these websites facilitating human trafficking across Scotland and the UK.”

Describing the websites as “crime scenes,” Gilbert urged for immediate shutdowns, accountability for operators, and the opportunity for victims to seek justice.

The MP for Edinburgh North and Leith reiterated the long-standing evidence pointing to these online platforms as significant contributors to sex trafficking and exploitation in the UK.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Gilbert urged Police Scotland to launch criminal investigations against those running pimping websites, emphasizing that this offense carries a maximum life sentence.

She further stressed the need for a review of laws in England and Wales, criticizing the lack of action against the operators of Adultwork and Vivastreet, who have operated with impunity for years.

In a separate development, the home affairs committee criticized the Home Office and police in 2023 for engaging with adult services sites, labeling it a “disgrace,” which ceased after the change in government.

Labour’s Gregor Poynton mentioned ongoing efforts to review prostitution laws to combat sexual exploitation, condemning the profit made from the suffering of vulnerable individuals.

Poynton stated that under the current government, officials have not engaged with online service providers, recognizing the role of technology in facilitating sexual exploitation and the need for responsible online platform management.

A report by the Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner in February highlighted these adult services sites as tools for abuse, emphasizing the necessity for stringent actions against them.

In response, Vivastreet emphasized its compliance with regulations under the Online Safety Act, emphasizing safety measures and collaboration with law enforcement to combat exploitative content.

Efforts to seek comments from AdultWork by the Mirror are ongoing.
