“NATO Intercept: Iran Missile Deflected Over Turkey”

Share

NATO forces were on high alert as Iran launched a missile into the airspace of a member state. The missile was intercepted by NATO defenses stationed in Turkey, causing fragments to land in empty fields in Gaziantep, located in southeast Turkey.

The Turkish defense ministry stated, “We reaffirm our commitment to taking all necessary actions promptly and decisively against any threats to our country’s territory and airspace.”

In response to the escalating tensions, the US advised non-essential personnel to evacuate its consulate near the southern Turkish city of Adana. Additionally, American citizens were urged to leave the “southeast Turkey” region by the US embassy in Ankara.

The incident occurred near the city of Adana, which is in close proximity to the strategic NATO base, Incirlik Air Base. This location has housed a US air force presence for many years and was reportedly the intended target of an Iranian ballistic missile intercepted by a NATO missile defense system on March 4.

Last week, Turkey announced that NATO successfully thwarted the ballistic missile’s trajectory as it passed through Iraqi and Syrian airspace en route to Turkey.

The Turkish defense ministry reiterated its commitment to regional stability and emphasized its readiness to respond promptly to any threats against its territory and airspace. The ministry confirmed that debris from the intercepted missile fell in Gaziantep, causing no casualties.

Türkiye emphasized the importance of maintaining good neighborly relations and regional peace while warning against any actions that could endanger its sovereignty. The country urged all parties to heed its alerts and cooperate for the common interest of regional security.
