NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, hailing from Hamilton and having previously played junior hockey with the Ottawa 67’s, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an off-ice training incident, according to the Ontario Hockey League. Mayich, aged 21, was drafted by the St. Louis Blues as a defenseman in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft.

Reports suggest that Mayich was admitted to the hospital on August 20 while preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season in Arizona. The OHL expressed its support and well wishes for Mayich during this challenging time.

The St. Louis Blues have expressed their concerns for Mayich’s recovery. Doug Armstrong, the team’s president of hockey operations, stated, “The entire Blues organization is keeping Matthew Mayich close to our hearts as we pray for his comfort and recovery while he continues to undergo medical treatment in Arizona.” The Blues also extended their deepest support to Mayich’s family, friends, and teammates.

Arizona State University, where Mayich is listed as a player, confirmed that a student on the hockey team collapsed during an outdoor morning exercise session and is currently hospitalized. The university is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

OHL commissioner Bryan Crawford also shared words of support, mentioning, “Our thoughts are with Matthew, his parents John and Christina, and the entire Mayich family.” The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly known as the Huskies, celebrated Mayich’s achievements when he signed with the ’67s in 2021 and when he was selected by the Blues in 2023.
