An NHS employee shared her distress following a disturbing incident where a couple directed racist abuse towards her in a park.
Apple Moorhouse stood up against Fyona Bairstow, 72, and Michael Bairstow, 77, who verbally attacked her, telling her to “go back to your dinghy.” Apple, a British citizen residing in the country since 2009, expressed feeling “scared” and unsettled by the offensive outburst.
The Bairstows targeted Apple after she requested them to leash their dog in Manor Heath Park, located in Halifax, West Yorkshire. A viral video captured the appalling event, depicting the long-married couple launching a verbal assault on the healthcare worker.
Reflecting on the incident, Apple emphasized the importance of addressing racism, stating, “It’s a significant issue that needs to be tackled. I’ve been here since 2009 and never encountered anything like this before. For ten years, everything was fine, but now it has worsened.”
“I used to work in healthcare and wanted to return, but after this incident, I felt afraid… I didn’t go back. Caring for others was my passion, but this experience made it difficult to resume,” she added.
The Bairstows, who filmed the confrontation, received eight-week jail sentences at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates’ Court for racially/religiously aggravated common assault against Apple. The charges stemmed from the altercation at Manor Heath Park on August 28, 2025, where Apple was present with her father and six-year-old daughter. Mr. Bairstow also admitted to assault by beating, involving another woman who tried to intervene.
During sentencing, a magistrate condemned the Bairstows’ behavior, expressing disappointment in their actions towards Apple. The couple expressed remorse for their conduct, with the prosecution describing the incident as “nasty.”
The court heard that the Bairstows’ unleashed dog approached Apple’s child, causing distress, leading her to intervene. When she requested the dog be leashed, Mr. Bairstow responded aggressively, instructing her to “go back to your dinghy” and making swimming gestures.
The incident highlighted the importance of addressing racial discrimination and promoting respect and understanding within communities.
