Luxury handbag and accessories brand Radley has been acquired by the parent company of Poundland, potentially leading to the closure of its stores.
Investment firm Gordon Brothers, which also holds ownership of LK Bennett, has completed the acquisition of Radley through a pre-pack administration process. Unfortunately, this transaction will result in the elimination of 42 job positions.
The acquisition encompasses Radley’s intellectual property assets, excluding its two physical locations in the UK situated in Covent Garden, London, and Glasgow, as well as its 19 concessions. It is anticipated that these locations will continue operations for approximately 14 weeks to clear existing stock.
Radley, recognized for its iconic Scottie dog branding, faced a pre-tax loss of £5.5 million in the previous fiscal year, with a decline in turnover from £72 million to £65.8 million.
Established as a market stall in London’s Camden Market in 1998, Radley has been entrusted to Gordon Brothers for future brand management, aiming to introduce Radley to a broader consumer base across different regions, product categories, and retail channels.
FTI Consulting stated that the decision for administration was prompted by challenging economic conditions within the retail sector, marked by reduced customer demand and escalating operational expenses, negatively influencing trading performance.
In a separate development within the retail industry, Flying Tiger Copenhagen is nearing a potential acquisition that could impact approximately 900 stores globally. Known for its range of budget-friendly Scandinavian-style products encompassing homeware, stationery, and toys, Flying Tiger operates roughly 80 stores in the UK and is currently under the ownership of Danske Bank and Nordea.
Reports from The Times suggest that private equity fund Modella Capital is on the verge of acquiring Flying Tiger, with a deal potentially imminent following the appointment of financial advisers earlier this year to explore strategic options, including a sale.
Flying Tiger recently reported a remarkable performance in 2024, achieving revenues of DKK 5.2 billion.
