“Royal Mail’s First Class Delivery Rates Fall Short Nationwide”

Share

Royal Mail’s performance in delivering first class post on time has come under scrutiny, with data revealing the most problematic areas across the UK. Despite aiming for a 90% next-day delivery rate for first class post, Royal Mail has fallen short in all 124 postcode regions.

Some of the worst-performing locations, with delivery rates below 70%, include Paisley near Glasgow, where only 62.7% of first class post was delivered on time. Other significantly affected areas encompass Blackburn, Burnley, Hull, Teesside, Stockport, Oxford, Ilford, Croydon, Newport, and Maidstone.

This issue arises following a recent increase in the cost of a first class stamp to £1.80, a significant rise from the 64p price in 2016. Royal Mail faced a record £21 million fine from Ofcom in October due to missing delivery targets, achieving only 77% on-time delivery for first class post and 92.5% for second class post in the 2024-25 period.

While the second class mail target stands at 95%, previous targets for first class mail (93%) and second class mail (98.5%) were revised down this April by Ofcom. Royal Mail has committed to meeting the new delivery targets by May next year through a £500 million investment initiative, which includes discontinuing Saturday deliveries for second class mail and transitioning to alternate weekday service.

These changes were initially implemented as a pilot in 35 delivery offices, with a nationwide rollout planned to commence this month. Royal Mail anticipates enhancing first class next-day delivery to approximately 85% within nine months of the reforms, eventually reaching the 90% target within a year. Additionally, the company aims to achieve a three-day delivery rate of 93% for second-class letters within nine months, meeting the 95% target by May next year.

A spokesperson for Royal Mail acknowledged past service shortcomings, emphasizing ongoing investments to enhance reliability. The company’s commitment to structural reforms and service quality improvement aims to establish a dependable, efficient, and sustainable postal service for customers nationwide.
