Skywatchers in the Americas, Europe, and Africa were treated to a partial lunar eclipse on Thursday evening into Friday, known as the “almost blood moon.” The eclipse reached its peak just after midnight ET, with Earth’s shadow covering 96% of the moon’s visible surface, creating a near-total lunar eclipse. This rare event won’t repeat until New Year’s Eve in 2028.
In Canada, residents in Vancouver witnessed the full moon during the lunar eclipse phase in the night sky. Similarly, a partial lunar eclipse was captured above Osborne Village in Winnipeg and at the R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant in Toronto.
In other parts of the Americas, people at the George Observatory in Brazos Bend State Park, Texas, took cellphone photos of the lunar eclipse. The Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., and the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans also provided stunning backdrops for the partial lunar eclipse. In Mexico, the moon appeared over the Mexican flag during the eclipse, while in Salvador, Bahia state, Brazil, it rose behind a coconut palm tree.
Across Europe, the moon during the partial lunar eclipse made a breathtaking appearance over Warsaw and was enjoyed by spectators on Parliament Hill, Hampstead Heath, London. In Lisbon, a plane was seen approaching for landing during the eclipse, and in Goutz, France, the reddish partial lunar eclipse lit up the night sky.
