Remnants of recent flooding can still be seen along the streets of St. Catharines, Ont., with household items and building materials piled up at the curbside.
The aftermath of multiple severe storms in less than two weeks is evident as couches, mattresses, and drywall line the exteriors of homes, illustrating the impact of the extreme weather events.
Mayor Mat Siscoe highlighted that the city faced three significant storm events within a short timeframe, marking the most substantial storms in St. Catharines’ history over an 11 to 12-day period.
Siscoe explained that while the initial storm was managed effectively by the stormwater system, subsequent storms occurred when the ground was already saturated, causing the system to be overwhelmed by the increased volume of water.
This led to widespread overland flooding and sewage backups into residential properties, with sewage entering some homes, exacerbating the damage.
One local farmer, Dave White of White Orchard Farms near St. David’s, faced challenges during the storms as his fields were submerged under water. Fortunately, proactive measures taken by White, including harvesting garlic ahead of time and enhancing drainage in the fields, helped mitigate the impact on his crops.

White, who also runs a restoration business, noted the inundation of calls from homeowners dealing with flooded properties, expressing concern as some areas were inundated by subsequent storms before the initial cleanup could be completed.
Anticipating an escalation in flooding incidents in the future, White urged for substantial investments in upgrading drainage and sewage infrastructure to cope with the increasing water volume due in part to urban expansion.

Mayor Siscoe emphasized that the recent flooding in St. Catharines was primarily due to the strain on the city’s aged infrastructure rather than specific blockages or failures.
