Keir Starmer has approved the utilization of British bases by the US to target Iranian missile sites in the Strait of Hormuz that are attacking ships, following Tehran’s disruption of the vital oil shipping route in response to joint US-Israeli actions. Prime Minister Boris Johnson had previously mentioned collaborating with international partners, including European allies, to secure the route.

Following a meeting with top ministers, a No10 spokesperson confirmed the agreement for US use of UK bases for defensive operations in the region to degrade missile capabilities targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The UK remains committed to defending its people, interests, and allies while emphasizing the need for de-escalation and a swift resolution to the conflict.

In response to Iran’s warning that allowing British military bases for US forces would be viewed as aggression, Starmer’s spokesperson reiterated the UK’s stance of not participating in initial strikes and avoiding involvement in a broader conflict. The US is authorized to use UK bases for a specific defensive purpose to address Iran’s continued aggression.

Ministers discussed Iran’s actions targeting commercial shipping and infrastructure in the Middle East, condemning the reckless strikes that risk escalating the crisis and worsening economic impacts globally. While the UK initially refrained from granting US requests for missile strikes, it later permitted the use of British airfields for defensive operations after Iran retaliated.

Housing Secretary Steve Reed praised the Prime Minister’s cautious approach to the conflict, emphasizing the need to defend British nationals. Despite concerns about global oil market disruption, Downing Street encouraged the public to carry on normally. The IEA suggested governments consider advising remote work to reduce oil demand, but the UK government assured that the country has a resilient oil supply, urging people to maintain their regular routines.
