“Vancouver Parents Struggle with Daycare Waitlists”

Share

Ella Dalling has been on waitlists for childcare for her nine-month-old daughter Murph since early in her pregnancy.

Dalling mentioned that they applied to approximately 20 daycare waitlists in various locations across Vancouver but have not received any responses.

According to Dalling, parents in Vancouver are left with the only option of waiting or contacting daycares directly due to the lack of available spots.

The fluctuating prices of daycares in British Columbia, where there are no fee caps, can vary from $200 to $2,000 per month.

Dalling emphasized the urgency of securing a spot at a daycare, stating that the cost is often secondary to the necessity of obtaining a spot.

Dalling has introduced an online platform called Little Scout, where daycares can list available spots, enabling parents to locate nearby options.

Through her venture, she has engaged with parents and childcare providers from across British Columbia, all highlighting the need for enhancements in the current system.

Dalling expressed concern about families contemplating the feasibility of expanding their families due to daycare availability issues, indicating a significant problem within the system.

A recent report from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives indicates that British Columbia lags behind other provinces in offering universally affordable childcare.

The childcare system in the province comprises a combination of private and non-profit entities, some receiving substantial government subsidies, while others charge full fees.

David Macdonald, a co-author of the report, highlighted the complexity of determining childcare costs in regions like British Columbia, portraying the issue as multifaceted.
