WhatsApp is set to address a significant concern by introducing a new feature that encourages users to take action promptly for enhanced communication. Currently, users must exchange phone numbers to chat on the platform, which is not always convenient. However, Meta-owned WhatsApp is finally resolving this issue by introducing unique usernames, allowing users to share them instead of their phone numbers.
According to WhatsApp, sharing a phone number can sometimes feel like a big leap when connecting with new acquaintances, such as classmates, neighbors, event contacts, or members of group chats. The platform stated that the new feature aims to provide users with the option to chat without divulging their phone numbers.
The update will also enhance privacy in group conversations. For instance, individuals participating in community chats or social groups will now be able to engage without immediately revealing their phone numbers to unfamiliar contacts.
WhatsApp has confirmed that users can now reserve their preferred usernames before the full launch. With billions of users on the platform, popular usernames may be claimed quickly, so early reservations offer a better chance of securing the desired name without missing out.
To reserve a username, users must update WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to Settings > Account > Username. The rollout of this feature will occur gradually in the upcoming months, with WhatsApp notifying users when usernames become available in their specific region.
