During my birthday weekend, I embarked on my inaugural trip to London, which was already filled with excitement. However, attending the performance of Wicked on stage transformed the experience into a truly unforgettable memory that has lingered with me ever since.
Since its debut at the Gershwin Theatre in New York in 2003, Wicked has captivated audiences and continues to thrive over twenty years later. In London’s West End, the show has been running since 2006, solidifying its position as the ninth longest-running production in West End history.
I was completely taken aback by the exceptional quality of the performance from beginning to end. The cast delivered a remarkable show, showcasing outstanding singing and choreography that truly stood out.
Our tickets for the Sunday 2pm show were secured through the official website here on Saturday for £39.50 each. Ticket prices vary based on seating preferences.
The portrayal of Elphaba by Charlotte Anne Steen was incredibly powerful, evoking tears multiple times with her moving performance, especially in songs like Defying Gravity and No Good Deed. Her rendition of Elphaba’s character traits was authentic and emotionally engaging.
Glinda, played by Lydia Gerrard, left a lasting impact as well, embodying the character’s sharp wit and comedic timing with finesse. The evolving relationship between Glinda and Elphaba throughout the show was heartwarming and emotionally resonant.
Jacob Young’s portrayal of Fiyero, particularly in the song “As Long As You’re Mine,” showcased his impressive vocal talent, leaving a lasting impression. The entire cast delivered an outstanding performance, leaving no room for criticism.
Other notable cast members included Sarah Ingram as Madame Morrible, Michael Matus as The Wizard, Hannah Qureshi as Nessarose, David McKechnie as Doctor Dillamond, and Ross Carpenter as Boq.
The intricate costume designs, crafted with flowing fabrics that enhanced the performers’ movements on stage, added a magical element to the show. The choreography, including lifts and turns, brought a mesmerizing quality to the live performance that surpassed television experiences like Strictly Come Dancing.
The realistic portrayal of the monkeys, seamlessly swinging across the set, demonstrated the production’s high quality and attention to detail, immersing the audience fully in the theatrical experience.
While the performers rightfully received praise, the unsung heroes behind the scenes, including costume designers and stage crew, showcased exceptional craftsmanship and coordination that elevated the overall production.
